The Glycemic Load tells you more about the effect that food will have on your weight, ie whether or not it will cause you to put on weight.<br />

If we are to believe that the most effective way to lose weight and keep it off is to by stabalising your blood sugar and insulin response to food, then we need to pay attention to the ways to achieve this. Keeping the blood sugar balanced depends not only on what we eat but also when we eat it.<br />
<P><br />

Firstly we need to reduce the amount of carbohydrate in our diets. We also need choose foods/carbohydrates with a  low glycemic-load (GL), combine carbohydrates with protein and cut back on stimulants and stress.<br />

To lose weight on this diet it is important to make sure that you eat no more than 40 GL a day and at main meals you should eat low GL carbohydrates with protein rich foods.<br />

How a food is processed, prepared or cooked is a key element in the GL of a food and therefore the effect it will have on your blood sugar. If you eat spaghetti if example your blood sugar levels and your insulin levels will rise quite gently until the body produces insulin and then they drop. However if you eat white bread they will rise twice as high and then drops down much lower. It is the peaks that damage your arteries making them less responsive to insulin and the troughs that leave you tired and sleepy and craving carbohydrates and or stimulants. It is strange that two foods made of roughly the same flour can have such different effects on the body. This is probably due to the fact that bread is cooked for longer than spaghetti. Needless to say eating white bread will do nothing to help you to lose weight<br />

The Glycemic Index the levels to which different foods raise your blood sugar compared with the effect of pure glucose. The more complex the carbohydrate, the lower the GI, as it will take longer for the sugar to be broken down and released into the blood stream . For example apples and oats are slow releasing and raisins and puffed rice cereal are fast releasing. So the foods you choose to help you to lose weight should be from the Low Glycemic Index foods<br />

I am about to share an article I found while cruising the Internet. It is written by USA Today. I was almost physically ill when I read it. It made me realize what an idiot I have been for almost 50 years of trying to lose weight. I have spent a small fortune on gyms, weight watcher meetings ,multiple types of weight loss diet plan, keeping various sizes of clothing available at all times, and all this time, all I had to do was write down what I was eating!<br />
<P><br />
According to this USA Today article, dieters who write down everything they eat each day lose twice as much weight as those who don&#8217;t and this is based on one of the largest weight-loss studies ever conducted. This confirms the importance of keeping a food diary — advice that nutritionists and weight loss programs have pushed for years. I do seem to remember being told to do this, but it flew right over my head.<br />
<P><br />
Scientists at four clinical research centers recruited 1,685 overweight or obese adults who weighed an average 212 pounds. Forty-four percent were African Americans.<br />
<P><br />
The participants were offered 20 weekly group sessions led by nutritionists and behavior counselors and encouraged to try to lose at least 9 pounds in six months. They were told to consume about 500 fewer calories a day, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, do about 180 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week, and keep daily food and exercise records. This was the only weight loss regime they had to perform. <P><br />
After 6 months, they found out that the ones who wrote down what they ate every day lost twice as much weight as the ones who didn&#8217;t. I am beside myself with anger. I figure the physical activity alone of writing all that down ought to amount to a few pounds of weight loss.<br />

The researchers of the study believe that it should be possible to harness the same force to slow the spread of obesity.<br />

Weight loss and fitness clubs are not new to us. Weight Watchers and Slimming World being two that have been successfully helping individuals with their weight loss for many years utilizing the power of social support.<br />

Most people who are striving to lose weight will be aware that there are some essential elements that are crucial to a successful weight loss campaign. Good nutrition is vital as is the addition of resistance and cardio training. More recently it has been agreed that another important element is mental attitude and the need to be positive. There seems to be no end to the lengths Americans will go to, to lose weight. From fasting to gorging, everyone seems to have the latest cure and the latest fad diet. There is no wonder people are searching online, asking &#8220;Why can&#8217;t I lose weight&#8221;?<br />

How crazy can diets get? How about getting injections of a pregnant woman&#8217;s urine? Or eating nothing but cabbage soup? Has the world gone mad or are they just having a laugh at our expense.<br />
<P><br />
If we are to take the question &#8220;Why can&#8217;t I lose weight?&#8221; seriously then we need to look at how that person has tried to lose weight in the past. If they have tried fad diet after fad diet and wanted to have <A HREF="http://healthy-weight-loss-programs.com/09/weight-loss-12/">weight loss</A> quickly then maybe that would be the first place to start.<br />
<P><br />
I recently had someone ask me that very question. &#8220;Why can&#8217;t I lose weight&#8221;? When we looked at her diet it was low in calories and low in protein. But what the person asking the question couldn&#8217;t understand was, she had been eating almost half the amount of food she normally ate and she still wasn&#8217;t losing weight.<br />

There is so much misleading information around on weight loss that it is no wonder there is total confusion. The sooner people realize that they will not lose weight permanently on a fad diet that either concentrates on one food, promises amazing <B>weight loss </B>in 7 days or suggests that you need to cut calories to lose weight, the sooner people will stop asking &#8220;Why can&#8217;t I lose weight&#8221;?<br />

It seems to me that the majority of people who have a chronic weight problem have been doing something wrong. They have either been eating the wrong foods or simply eating too much and probably too late in the day.  Anyone who thinks that they can lose weight by embarking on a fad diet that is far from being a well balanced nutritious regime is just fooling themselves.<br />

It is vital that all the  people who are saying &#8220;why can&#8217;t I lose weight?&#8221; realize, first and foremost, that a healthy well balanced nutritious diet is the only way forward, not just for their immediate <A HREF="http://healthy-weight-loss-programs.com/09/weight-loss-12/">weight loss</A> regime, but for life.<br />
<P><br />
Rapid weight loss is detrimental to your health and is unlikely ever to be sustained. Consuming low levels of calories as suggested by some diet regimes is basically a semi starvation diet and can cause loss of muscle from our organs including our heart. This is not a sensible way forward.<br />
<P><br />
Always look for the scientific evidence to back up any diet you may choose to follow. And remember it is physiologically impossible to lose more than 2lb of fat a week. Any diet promising more than that is lying. You may however lose more weight than 2lb but it won&#8217;t be fat. It will either be water or muscle and most importantly your body will not be able to sustain that <B>weight loss</B> when you return to normal eating.<br />
<P><br />
So to answer the question &#8220;why can&#8217;t I lose weight?&#8221; it is likely to be because you are not eating enough of the right foods at the right time of day. It really is as simple as that.<br />

Over these years I have learned many things that might help if you find yourself waging this war. I call it a war as that is how I see it, and each step is a different battle. These battles can be won with a few minor changes in our lifestyle and understanding of what we are doing.<br />
<P><br />
Excess weight and obesity have been associated with an increased risk for numerous medical conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, osteoarthritis, some types of cancers, sleep apnea, and elevated blood cholesterol levels.<br />
<P><br />
It should be noted that <A HREF="http://healthy-weight-loss-programs.com/10/weight-loss-31/">weight loss</A> for those who are overweight can make a major impact on the conditions listed above. Many overweight people also report improved mood, increased in self-esteem and motivation, and feeling healthier in general after they have lost weight.<br />
<P><br />
The desire for weight loss must come from the individual. If you&#8217;re truly ambivalent about making changes in your lifestyle or are doing this to please someone else, you&#8217;re likely to fail. When making changes, decide what&#8217;s right for your lifestyle. Your best friend&#8217;s diet and exercise plan may be completely wrong for your habits and interests. The key is to find a program that works for you.<br />
<P><br />
Don&#8217;t blame yourself if you fall down. If you once fail at your attempt to curtail your overeating, it doesn&#8217;t mean you are a failure at weight loss and that you should just give up. Accept that you made a poor choice, but don&#8217;t let that poor choice influence the rest of your plan. The same holds true with exercise. Skipping a few workouts doesn&#8217;t mean you can&#8217;t get back on track. <B>Weight loss</B> does not involve making perfect choices all the time, rather, it&#8217;s about attempting to make good choices more often than poor ones. You are only human, and you will fall every once in a while.<br />
<P><br />
Avoid surroundings where you know you&#8217;re tempted to make poor food choices. Everyone has a time when we&#8217;re most likely to overeat, whether it&#8217;s the morning coffee break or after-work gathering with friends. Try to plan other activities or distractions for those times, or plan in advance how you&#8217;re going to handle them and stick to it.<br />
<P><br />
Surround yourself with people who support your efforts. Even our good friends can knowingly or unknowingly sabotage weight loss attempts. Spend time with those people who will not pressure you to make poor food choices.<br />
<P><br />
Decide on some nonfood rewards for yourself when you reach interim goals. For examples, at the end of the first week of healthy eating or after the first 5 pounds lost, buy yourself a new CD or book. <A HREF="http://healthy-weight-loss-programs.com/10/weight-loss-31/">Weight loss</A> can be fun. Be good to yourself.<br />
<P><br />
Stock your pantry and refrigerator with healthy foods. Get rid of the high-calorie, low-nutrition snacks like chips and candy. But don&#8217;t forget to have plenty of healthier options available as well, such as popcorn (hold the butter, try Parmesan cheese sprinkles), low-fat cheese and yogurt, fruit, instant cocoa without added sugar, sugar-free popsicles or puddings, or whatever appeals to you when you&#8217;re hungry for a snack.<br />
<P><br />
Set small goals and focus on these rather than the &#8220;big picture.&#8221; Decide where you want to be in a week or in a month, rather than focusing on the total amount of weight you&#8217;d like to lose. We tend to have a poor self image of ourselves, and having successes in a small goal is attainable. We need these success to keep us motivated for further weight loss.<br />

Most people think that overweight teens will usually get over it, but what they don&#8217;t realize is that teens have to go through ridicule and embarrassment among their peers. Healthy weight management can be  a way of life for teens, just as with adults. Weight loss plans for teen are workable and will give you the best results viewed in an upbeat manner.<br />
<P><br />
Healthy weight management is a process that will work much better when it is looked at with a positive attitude. Healthy eating simply means following two basic steps: variety and moderation. This is essential when setting up a <A HREF="http://healthy-weight-loss-programs.com/09/weight-loss-13/">weight loss</A> plan for teens. Success is absolutely dependent upon variety and moderation. Be very upbeat in your approach and motivate with lots of love. This is a very emotional time for teens, and the need to feel successful in this endeavor is very important. Each milestone should be celebrated until the goal weight is met.<br />
<P><br />
Drinking plenty of water is also recommended. Often simply drinking a glass of water will help curb any hunger pains one may experience.  This is a time to turn the weight loss plan for teens into a teaching experience. Teach your teen to drink at least 8 &#8211; 8 oz glasses. If they drink a full glass of water before they eat, they will naturally eat less food as their stomach will be quite full already. Drinking at least six to eight glasses of water a day keeps the body refreshed. Since weight loss depends on how the body eliminates body wastes, the body must stay hydrated.<br />

Have your <B>weight loss</B> plan for teens include drinking more milk and protein shakes. Protein shakes has an effect of making you fill full all the time. This is the main reason why people always drink protein shakes at breakfast. Drink about 6 to 8 glasses of water daily. Make sure a good percentage of the foods in your weight loss plan for teens are alkaline. This would include lots of colorful vegetables. Have a large variety and set out vegetable trays for snacking. These are habits in eating that can be developed. Drinking that 10-glass requirement throughout the day will help your teen regulate their eating because even water does make you feel temporarily full. Be sure to include lots of crunchy fruits and vegetables to help curb the need to munch.<br />

Make snacks available with low fat protein like turkey and chicken. I find the protein shakes works best for teens. The healthiest thing you can do for your body and <B>weight loss </B>is to drink water.<br />
One of the misunderstandings about water consumption is that if we drink less will have less water retention. Nothing could be further from the truth. Water retention is more likely to happen when we starve our bodies of water. Our bodies go onto red alert thinking there is going to be a draught and they hold on to what water they have.<br />
<P><br />
Most children, from the time they enter kindergarten, have been told drink lots of water. As a matter of fact an adult should drink eight, eight ounce glasses of water every day. Do you know that water plays an important part in weight loss?  But do you know that if you drank eight, eight ounces of water and did not change your eating habits you would probably lose weight.  Not a lot but you would lose some.<br />
<P><br />
Every diet that I have been on recommended that you drink eight, eight ounce glasses of water a day.  Why? Because they know that the chances are good that if you do that their diet will work more efficiently and you will experience a more successful <A HREF="http://healthy-weight-loss-programs.com/09/weight-loss-11/">weight loss.</A>  Unfortunately, many of us start of with good intentions but run out of steam along the way and do not continue this good habit.  If we all drank eight ounces of water each and every day instead of 8 cans of diet coke or other diet drink, there would be far fewer overweight people around.<br />
<P><br />
So why is water so important to <B>weight loss?</B> We are always being told that it is but not many of us understand why we have to do it.  After some research I will attempt to do that.<br />
<P><br />
You see our kidneys need water to do their job of cleansing the impurities from our bodies.  If our kidneys are not working properly or if they are water deprived they cannot do their job and the Liver has to pick up the slack.  This takes the Liver away from its main purpose which is to turn fat into energy. So what happens when the liver cannot convert fat into energy it stores it for a rainy day.  It gets stored in your hips, around your waist and other places of your body.<br />
<P><br />
At first when you  drink your eight glasses of water a day you may find yourself running to the bathroom and it seems like you are just pouring water in and it is coming right out again. Don’t give up at this point because your body is simply not used to you having all this water and is getting adjusted. Previously when the body was not getting enough water it started storing it in case of an emergency. Now that it is getting all the water it says I no longer need an emergency supply and will start releasing that stored water, from you hips , your stomach, your legs, arms and other places.  Bingo you lose weight. Drinking water helps with <A HREF="http://healthy-weight-loss-programs.com/09/weight-loss-11/">weight loss.</A><br />

So drink lots of water for a successful <B>weight loss</B> program.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><B>Weight Loss</B> is becoming a massive industry, not only for the health services around the world but also for &#8220;big business&#8221;. The &#8220;average Joe&#8221; who thinks they will jump on the latest bandwagon to make some money. Unfortunately due to the fact that there are many fad diets out there that promise unrealistic results, many desperate dieters will find themselves constantly moving from one diet to another to find the one that offers then lasting success.<br />
<P><br />
Are you a <A HREF="http://healthy-weight-loss-programs.com/09/weight-loss-23/">weight loss</A> yoyo-er? Do you lose weight only to put it back on again time after time? Perhaps you even put more weight on than before and your weight is gradually creeping up higher and higher and you don&#8217;t know what to do about it. Well it may help you to know that you are not alone in this and weight loss yoyo-ers are on the increase.<br />
<P><br />
Once you get into the cycle of weight off &#8211; weight on, your body, not surprisingly, becomes confused. Once upon a time your body had a set point, a weight that was the norm for you. With repeated weight gain followed by weight loss followed by weight gain etc etc,  your body is constantly changing that set point until it is at a higher rate than you would like it to be. It can then be very difficult to attain the weight loss you so desire. Your body plateaus and any further weight loss seems like an impossibility. When this happens we often we get frustrated and disheartened and give up on the weight loss diet thinking it isn&#8217;t working. This inevitably results in our weight starting to increase once again to an unacceptable level.<br />
<P><br />
So what can you do to  re regulate your set point? First and foremost, it is important to realize that you are going to have to be far more persistent in your approach to weight loss. One of the reasons you find it difficult to sustain your weight loss is because your adrenal glands have become exhausted. Very often when you have been on a <B>weight loss</B> diet  month after month, perhaps not following a well structured diet, maybe cutting calories or missing meals or eating too many carbohydrates, your body is constantly in a fight or flight state. This situation will inevitably leave you tired confusing your metabolism and encouraging it to turn to stimulants such as tea, coffee, and diet drinks as a pick me up to compensate for what may well have been an energy deficient diet. Unfortunately this just activates the sympathetic nervous system to release more stress hormones which in turn requires more stimulants and so the cycle goes on and weight loss becomes less and less likely. This vicious circle can be almost impossible to break without professional help.<br />
<P><br />
In my experience people who have been on a &#8220;not so healthy&#8221; <B>weight loss</B> diet will inevitably have lost some muscle as well as fat. As muscle burns energy this will not help your weight loss regime as a decreased muscle mass means a lower metabolic rate. Yet another vicious cycle your body has to find a way to break. This increases your chances gaining weight rather than losing weight and so the yoyo effect continues.<br />
<P><br />
As I said at the beginning of this article, the weight loss industry is big business and it is not in their interest for you to lose weight forever. This may be a hard pill to swallow, but sadly it is true. If everybody lost weight easily and permanently there would be no weight loss industry and many people would be out of a job. If you want to know if your weight loss plan is a good one then it needs to have a good scientific explanation so that you are certain it is going to work to not only help you to lose weight but also the gain health. If it sounds amazing, maybe too good to be true, then it is probably a fad diet that will do nothing to help you to achieve permanent weight loss<br />

<A HREF="http://healthy-weight-loss-programs.com/09/weight-loss-23/">Weight loss</A> is a serious issue. It is not something to &#8220;play&#8221; with. Your future health is dependant on you losing weight so take your diet seriously. If weight loss has been an issue for you for many years then it would be advisable to get the advice and support of a professional weight loss coach who can monitor your progress.<br />
<P><br />
You need to be patient and remember it has probably taken you many years to become over weight particularly if you have been a weight loss yoyo-er, so it is likely take time to crack the cycle and achieve permanent weight loss. Remember also that tackling your weight loss problem also means that you are improving your overall health.<br />
<P><br />
At the end of the day health is the most important thing. There is no point in looking forward to early retirement and all the enjoyable things that freedom can bring if you haven&#8217;t got the health to make the most of them<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If we were to believe all we read in the media we could be forgiven for being totally confused by all the hype on diets and weight loss. Many diet gurus would have you believe that it is relatively easy to lose weight and some diet plans even suggest you can lose up to 11lb in 2 weeks. The problem arises when, having lost the weight, you start to put it all back on again and you are back to square one.<br />
<P><br />
In order to really understand the process of <A HREF="http://healthy-weight-loss-programs.com/10/weight-loss-29/">weight loss</A> we need to understand the process that made us overweight in the first place.<br />
<P><br />
All human beings have a family of hormones and enzymes that are intended to fight the fat. Unfortunately our poor and inconsistent dietary habits means that changes take place in the body that make it more difficult for the body to lose fat and ultimately sustain any weight loss.<br />
<P><br />
If we miss a meal or eat too many carbohydrates our bodies respond by elevating the stress hormones. The body then thinks it is in a life threatening situation and responds by releasing stored glycogen into the blood to raise the blood sugar. If this cycle is repeated on a regular basis our bodies will be experiencing bouts of high and low blood sugar causing the body to be over stressed and therefore unable to deal effectively with weight loss.<br />
<P><br />
If the body has elevated blood sugar levels, the response is to release insulin to lower the blood sugar. Insulin levels will remain high if the body is consistently under nourished with the wrong food combinations. Excess insulin along with inactivity can prevent weight loss due to the fact that inactive muscles become insulin resistant and more and more calories are stored in the fat cells. This can ultimately progress to situation where the body becomes insulin resistant.<br />
<P><br />
If you find yourself accumulating fat in the middle of your body then you have more than likely become insulin resistant. Weight loss can be very difficult if this is the case.<br />
<P><br />
However even more important is the fact the fat accumulation will eventually extend to other<br />
areas of the body and you will be come progressively more obese. As the muscles and fat cells become less sensitive to insulin, blood sugar levels will rise higher and the body will be forced to use the pancreas to help to lower the levels. In a worst case scenario this can result in Type 11 Diabetes.<br />
<P><br />
If you are to succeed in your <A HREF="http://healthy-weight-loss-programs.com/10/weight-loss-29/">weight loss </A>you need to be aware that there are various factors that help to determine how quickly and effectively you lose weight, one of which is turning fat into lean muscle. You need to eat right sort of foods for your metabolic type and do the appropriate exercises on a regular basis. Very often this can result in an initial weight gain as you gain muscle (which weighs more than fat). Then as if by magic your body will start to experience weight loss that can often seem to be faster than normal. Of course a weight gain, when on a weight loss diet, can be very disconcerting and many people give up mistakenly thinking that the diet isn&#8217;t working for them<br />

Because muscle is the most metabolically active tissue in your body, your ability to burn up unwanted fat and subsequently achieve weight loss is improved. However it is important to remember that although you may think that weight loss is your goal the chances are what you are really aiming for is a more streamlined body. If in order to achieve a more streamlined shape you need to convert fat into lean muscle and gain a bit of weight in the process, then <B>weight loss</B> has to become a secondary issue.<br />

In order to help overcome this mind set it is a good idea when starting a diet to take your measurements as well as getting weighed. This way you will be relieved to find that you are losing inches even when your weight is seemingly staying the same. This will give you the incentive you need to continue<br />
